Having accompanied development organizations in the elaboration of the key areas of their intervention strategies aimed at supporting sustainable economic development, Baastel has built a solid expertise in this domain to appropriately respond to the needs of its clients. For example, in partnership with a sectoral expert, Baastel has produced a program design report on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for the natural resources extractive industry in the Andes. One of the important goals of this program is to integrate the population in the region in sustainable economic activities generated by this industry through the implementation of the CSR projects. Additionally, in the evaluations Baastel manages, the creation of revenue generating activities becomes an important indicator of the success of a project. In a recent evaluation of a trade-related technical assistance and capacity building program, the Baastel team has taken into account the effects of the given activities on the delivery of sustainable livelihoods to all the trade partners.
The private sector must develop to in order to initiate and support sustained and sustainable economic growth in developing countries. Included here are the multiple facets of the private sector, i.e. formal and informal sectors; rural, urban and suburban businesses; microenterprises, and small/medium enterprises; and large industries and foreign investments. Microfinance plays an important role in this regard. In fact, through microcredit and other basic financial products, microfinance is most likely to have an effect on the poor who otherwise would not have the chance to develop their entrepreneurial abilities and spirit.
With a professional team that is knowledgeable in all issues at play in economic development, the private sector, microfinance and poverty reduction, Baastel has substantial expertise in this sector, at both the micro and macro levels. Baastel’s mandates have focused on the following:
- Evaluation of the African Project Development Facility for the account with the International Finance Corporation;
- Evaluation/monitoring of multiple microfinance institutional networks (Cameroon Cooperative Credit Union League, Nyèsigiso in Mali, Pamécas in Senegal, strengthening of financial services adapted to women’s needs in the Congo; and Yété Mali in Guinea); and,
- Regulatory support, in terms of project planning and evaluation of rural cooperative networks (Peru, Guatemala, Guinea).
For these types of services, Baastel’s clients have included: multilateral and bilateral aid agencies (International Finance Corporation, CIDA); non-government institutions (Développement international Desjardins, Société de coopération pour le développement international) as well as local networks (Confédération des Institutions Financières (CIF) de l'Afrique de l'Ouest), etc.
